A parliamentary committee, tasked with reviewing a bill aimed at increasing the minimum marriage age for women from 18 to 21, has been granted an additional extension to submit its report. The upcoming Budget session of Parliament, commencing on January 31, marks the final session of the current Lok Sabha before parliamentary elections are announced.

With the committee now expected to finalize its report by May, following the four-month extension, it's noteworthy that the tenure of the 17th Lok Sabha concludes on June 16. Consequently, the Prohibition of Child Marriage (Amendment) Bill, 2021, introduced in the Lok Sabha and currently pending, is likely to lapse with the conclusion of the House's term in June.
