Amit Shah says CAA will be implemented before 2024 Lok Sabha elections
Amit Shah asserts CAA execution pre-2024 elections. This statement fuels discussions on the controversial citizenship law's timeline and implications.
On Saturday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah affirmed that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) would be officially implemented before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, emphasizing it as an "act of the country." Shah clarified that the CAA's purpose is to grant citizenship and not to revoke anyone's citizenship, addressing concerns about the act. Speaking at the ET Now-Global Business Summit in Delhi, he asserted that the minorities, particularly the Muslim community, are needlessly agitated, stating that the CAA cannot strip anyone of their citizenship.
Shah accused the previous Congress government of reneging on its commitment to implement the CAA, highlighting it as a promise made by the Congress during a time when minorities faced persecution in Bangladesh and Pakistan. The BJP has consistently championed the implementation of the CAA as a significant electoral agenda.
The Citizenship Amendment Act, passed on December 11, 2019, by the Narendra Modi-led government, aims to provide Indian nationality to non-Muslim migrants who faced persecution in Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, and entered India before December 31, 2014, due to religious persecution. The Act excludes Muslims and other communities from its provisions, leading to widespread protests across the country.
