6 dead including 4 children at Ottawa home; student who lived with family arrested
Tragedy in Ottawa: 6 dead, including 4 children, in a mass stabbing at a home. A student living with the family arrested.
In Ottawa, Canada, a horrifying incident unfolded as a 19-year-old student from Sri Lanka, Febrio De-Zoysa, stands accused of brutally stabbing and killing six individuals he lived with, including a 2 1/2-month-old baby girl and three other children from a Sri Lankan family. The tragic event occurred at their Ottawa home, leaving the community in shock.
Ottawa Police Chief Eric Stubbs disclosed that the suspect employed an "edged weapon" or a "knife-like object" during the attack. The victims, all Sri Lankan nationals, had recently immigrated to Canada. The deceased include a 35-year-old mother, a 7-year-old son, a 4-year-old daughter, a 2-year-old daughter, and the infant, along with a 40-year-old family acquaintance.
Charged with six counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder, De-Zoysa was swiftly apprehended by authorities. Mass killings are uncommon in Canada, intensifying the gravity of the situation. Upon arriving at the scene, police found the family's father outside, urgently calling for assistance. He sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and is currently hospitalized.
The police chief decried the incident as a "senseless act of violence" against innocent victims. De-Zoysa made a brief court appearance, where he was ordered not to communicate with the surviving father or other witnesses. The case has been adjourned until March 13 to allow the accused time to secure legal representation. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka's high commission is coordinating with relatives in Colombo, the country's capital, to address the aftermath of this tragic event.
