Slovakia's Pro-Russia PM Deepens Energy and Transport Ties to Ukraine

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, known for his pro-Russian stance, aimed to enhance collaboration with Ukraine in energy, railway connections, and grain transport, despite differing views from allies. Following a joint session between the Slovak and Ukrainian governments, Fico expressed Slovakia's desire to be a supportive and friendly neighbor to Ukraine.

Since assuming power in October, Fico has steered Slovakia's foreign policy towards closer relations with Moscow, diverging from the European Union's stance of isolating Russia. This shift has included discontinuing state military aid to Kyiv and initiating dialogue with Moscow.

However, Fico remains committed to maintaining economic ties with Ukraine, allowing commercial arms deals to continue despite the shift in foreign policy. While previous Slovak administrations provided substantial military support to Kyiv following Russia's invasion in 2022, Fico clarified that Slovakia would uphold commercial agreements for military supplies while halting state military aid.

During the meeting with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal in eastern Slovakia, Fico highlighted the need to bolster Ukraine's infrastructure and transportation networks. Both countries agreed to initiate passenger service on an existing wide-gauge freight rail link from Kosice, Slovakia, to Kyiv. Additionally, plans were made to modernize the main road border crossing and enhance cross-border electricity transmission networks shortly.

Fico's efforts to deepen cooperation with Ukraine reflect Slovakia's nuanced approach to balancing its strategic interests and maintaining diplomatic ties amid regional tensions. Despite his pro-Russian stance, Fico remains committed to supporting Ukraine's development and stability, emphasizing the importance of solidarity and pragmatic collaboration between the two nations.
