More Climate Experts Object to Emissions Target Watchdog's Offsets Policy
Climate experts criticize emission offset policy of climate watchdog.
Climate experts, who serve as advisers to the climate watchdog, have voiced strong criticism regarding its recent decision to allow the use of emission offset policies. This decision, seen as a policy reversal, has triggered significant discontent among experts within the organization.
In response to the decision, a group of 21 advisers, constituting around one-fifth of the Technical Advisory Group (TAG) of the climate watchdog, expressed their displeasure in a letter addressed to the leadership of the organization. They condemned the move and called for the resignation of the chief executive and board members who supported it.
The advisers highlighted that during the previous meeting of the TAG group, no proposal regarding the utilization of carbon credits or other environmental attribute certificates (EACs) had been presented or discussed. While the organization had previously sought evidence regarding the effectiveness of EACs, the advisers were not provided with any analysis of the responses received.
In their letter, the advisers emphasized that the decision to proceed with the use of EACs appeared premature and lacked the support of the TAG group. They expressed concern that the decision was made without due consideration of the potential consequences and without comprehensive analysis.
This discontent within the organization underscores broader debates surrounding emission offset policies and their efficacy in addressing climate change. Critics argue that such policies may provide a loophole for companies to continue emitting greenhouse gases without making meaningful reductions. The opposition from climate experts within the organization reflects a growing scepticism about the reliance on offset mechanisms in climate action strategies.
The controversy surrounding the decision highlights the challenges faced by organizations tasked with setting climate standards and underscores the importance of transparent and evidence-based decision-making in addressing climate change.
