BCI Expresses Concern Over Rise in Low-Quality Law Colleges, Calls for Universities to Grant NOC After Evaluation
Bar Council of India urges universities to vet new law colleges, citing concerns over proliferation of substandard institutions.
Expressing concerns over the burgeoning number of low-quality law colleges across India, the Bar Council of India has issued correspondence to all university Vice Chancellors, urging them to conduct meticulous inspections prior to granting No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for new legal education institutions.
Emphasizing their regulatory mandate, the BCI underscored the imperative for universities and governmental bodies to actively engage in ensuring the delivery of quality education. They underscored the necessity for collaborative efforts to stem the proliferation of substandard law colleges. "It is essential to acknowledge the pivotal roles played by both the State Government and the Universities in addressing the rampant growth of subpar law colleges. The cornerstone of addressing this issue lies in the groundwork undertaken by the State Government's Higher Education Department and the Universities, which serve as the grassroots entities responsible for upholding educational standards," they emphasized. Despite concerted endeavors, the BCI lamented significant challenges posed by the rampant expansion of subpar law colleges.
BCI Proposes NOC Granting Guidelines
In its recommendations, the BCI proposes certain guidelines, criteria, and procedures for the assessment and issuance of NOCs:
