UK returns looted Ghana artifacts on loan after 150 years

The United Kingdom has returned 32 gold and silver treasures looted from the Asante Kingdom over 150 years ago, now on a six-year loan, according to Ghanaian negotiators.

These artifacts, comprising 15 items from the British Museum and 17 from the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), were taken during the 19th-century conflicts between the British and the Asante people. Among them are gold and silver regalia associated with the Asante Royal Court.

Under the agreement, these relics will be exhibited at the Manhyia Palace Museum in Kumasi, Ashanti region's capital, as part of celebrations honoring the king's silver jubilee.

Ivor Agyeman-Duah, the chief negotiator, confirmed the return of the items, stating they were loaned to the palace.

This event occurs amid increasing international calls for the repatriation of African artifacts from former colonial powers. Nigeria, for instance, is in discussions to reclaim thousands of metal objects looted from the ancient kingdom of Benin, currently held by museums and collectors in the United States and Europe.

Two years ago, Benin received twenty-four treasures and artworks stolen in 1892 by French colonial forces during the sacking of the royal Palace of Abomey.

The return of these artifacts marks a significant step in acknowledging historical injustices and promoting cultural restitution. It reflects a broader global movement towards decolonization and the recognition of the rightful ownership of cultural heritage by indigenous communities.

By showcasing these treasures at the Manhyia Palace Museum, Ghana seeks to reconnect its people with their cultural heritage and affirm the significance of these artifacts in Asante history.

This act of repatriation underscores the importance of dialogue and collaboration between nations in addressing the legacies of colonialism and promoting cultural equity and reconciliation.
