India-Iran ties hit new milestone, sign 10-year contract on operating Chabahar Port

In a significant development for India-Iran relations, both nations have inked a 10-year agreement granting India management control over a crucial segment of the Chabahar Port. This landmark deal is poised to enhance trade routes between India and landlocked Afghanistan, Iran, and various Eurasian countries. Under the agreement, India will assume operational control of the Shahid-Beheshti Port Terminal.

The historic agreement was formalized in Tehran, with an Indian delegation led by Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Iran's Minister of Roads and Urban Development Mehrdad Bazrpash present during the signing ceremony. The accord aims to strengthen cooperation between India and Iran, with the shared objective of transforming the Chabahar port into a key regional trade transit and connectivity hub.

The Chabahar Port holds immense strategic significance due to its location along Iran's southeastern coast, overlooking the Gulf of Oman. It serves as a vital maritime gateway, offering an alternative route for transporting goods to Afghanistan, Iran, and various Central Asian nations. By securing management control over a portion of the port, India aims to bolster its trade and transit links with these countries while bypassing traditional routes via Pakistan.

This agreement underscores the deepening partnership between India and Iran, reflecting their mutual commitment to fostering regional economic integration and connectivity. By leveraging the potential of the Chabahar Port, both countries seek to facilitate seamless trade and transit operations, thereby enhancing economic opportunities and promoting regional stability.

The successful conclusion of this deal represents a significant milestone in India's efforts to strengthen its engagement with Iran and expand its presence in the strategically important region. It is expected to unlock new avenues for cooperation and collaboration between the two nations, paving the way for enhanced trade and connectivity across South Asia and beyond.
