UK Cautions ECHR on Migration Before Rwanda Deportation Flights
UK advises ECHR on migration issues prior to deportation flights to Rwanda, seeking caution and compliance with human rights.
Minister for Europe, Nusrat Ghani, is set to advocate for concerted action to address illegal migration at a Council of Europe gathering in Strasbourg. Ghani's office underlines her intention to stress the European Court of Human Rights' commitment to sanction deportations solely in "exceptional circumstances" with a "risk of irreparable harm." This comes amidst the UK's plan to deport asylum-seekers to Rwanda, facilitated by Rishi Sunak's Rwanda Bill which recently cleared Parliament. Scheduled for July, this move permits ministers to bypass certain international human rights provisions while refraining from annulling the European Convention on Human Rights, administered by the Strasbourg court. The UK seeks to caution the ECHR against overreaching its mandate as it proceeds with its contentious deportation scheme.
