"Making Watertight Case": Pune Top Cop To NDTV On Porsche Crash That Killed 2
A 17-year-old in Pune, driving his father's Porsche, killed two techies in a crash. Police charge him with culpable homicide; his father faces neglect charges.
In a tragic incident in Pune, a 17-year-old, driving his father’s luxury Porsche, collided with a motorcycle, resulting in the deaths of two young IT professionals. The Pune Police have made it clear that the teenager was aware that his actions could lead to fatal consequences. This case has sparked significant attention and debate, especially regarding the legal charges and the role of the teenager's father.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday when the teenager, celebrating his Class 12 results with friends at two pubs in Pune, drove the Porsche in a reckless manner. The collision happened in the Kalyani Nagar area, where the car hit the motorcycle carrying Aneesh Awadhiya, 24, and Ashwini Koshta, 25. The impact was so severe that Awadhiya was thrown into a parked car, and Koshta was flung 20 feet into the air. Both victims died on the spot.
Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, in an interview with NDTV, stated that the teenager’s actions demonstrated a clear understanding of the potential for deadly consequences. Therefore, instead of charging him under Section 304(a) of the Indian Penal Code, which pertains to causing death by negligence, the police are applying Section 304, which involves culpable homicide not amounting to murder. This decision is based on the premise that the teenager knew that driving at high speed without a number plate, especially after consuming alcohol, could likely result in death.
The Commissioner emphasized that the police are building a strong case, treating the teenager's friends, who were also in the car, as witnesses. The teenager, who is the son of a prominent Pune builder, underwent a medical test immediately after the accident. His blood samples were taken for a forensic report to confirm alcohol consumption. However, Commissioner Kumar is confident that the report will not significantly alter the case, as they are focusing on the teen's awareness of the potential consequences of his actions.
