Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah urges PM Modi to cancel JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna's diplomatic passport, ensuring his return to face multiple sexual abuse ch

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has renewed his call for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to revoke the diplomatic passport of Hassan Member of Parliament (MP) and Janata Dal (Secular) [JD(S)] leader Prajwal Revanna. This appeal is aimed at ensuring Revanna's return to India to face legal proceedings related to multiple sexual abuse allegations.

Prajwal Revanna, who has been in Europe since April 27, 2024, is allegedly involved in a series of sexual abuse cases. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, in his second letter to the Prime Minister, emphasized the severity of the accusations against Revanna, describing them as "a grave series of incidents." He has urged PM Modi to not only cancel Revanna’s diplomatic passport but also to take decisive actions to facilitate his return to India so that the law can take its due course.

In his letter, Siddaramaiah expressed deep concern over Revanna's use of his diplomatic passport to flee the country, describing it as an abuse of diplomatic privileges. He highlighted that Revanna, the grandson of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda and a JD(S) candidate for the 2024 general elections, left for Germany just hours before an FIR was filed against him. The passport in question bears the number D1135500.

The Karnataka government has responded to the allegations by establishing a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case. Despite the issuance of a Look Out Circular, a Blue Corner Notice, and two notices under Section 41A of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), Revanna has managed to evade authorities and remain in hiding. The FIR against him includes serious charges such as rape, sexual assault, disrobing women, and forcibly videographing sexual acts to blackmail the victims.

Former Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy (HDK) has also advised Revanna to ignore the counsel of his lawyers and return to India to cooperate with the SIT investigation. Kumaraswamy's advice underscores the gravity of the situation and the need for Revanna to face the allegations head-on.

In his letter dated May 22, 2024, Siddaramaiah urged the Prime Minister to treat the matter with the utmost seriousness and to take immediate action under Section 10 (3)(h) of the Passport Act of 1967 or any other relevant legal provisions to revoke Revanna’s diplomatic passport. This action, Siddaramaiah argued, is crucial for securing Revanna's return to India in the interest of public justice.

The Chief Minister’s persistent efforts to bring Revanna back to face justice reflect a commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that political status or connections do not obstruct legal processes. The case has garnered significant attention due to the high-profile nature of the accused and the serious nature of the allegations.

The JD(S) has been relatively quiet on the issue, with no official statements addressing the accusations against one of their prominent leaders. The silence from the party leadership has led to various speculations about the internal dynamics and the potential impact on their political standing ahead of the 2024 general elections.

As the investigation progresses, the role of the SIT will be crucial in gathering evidence and ensuring that justice is served. The Chief Minister's appeal to the Prime Minister signifies a coordinated effort by the state government to seek central intervention in a case that has far-reaching implications for political accountability and justice in India.

In conclusion, the case of Prajwal Revanna is a test of the legal and political systems in India. It highlights the challenges of dealing with high-profile cases involving powerful individuals and the need for robust mechanisms to ensure that justice is not only done but is also seen to be done. The actions taken in the coming days will be closely watched as a measure of the country’s commitment to the rule of law.
