Indian Students Struggle to Find Employment in Canada: Viral Video of Long Queues at Tim Horton's Job Fair

By HT Trending Desk Jun 22, 2024 04:52 PM IST

The high cost of living and the lack of job opportunities in Canada have left many Indian students struggling to make ends meet. This ongoing struggle was starkly highlighted by a recent viral video showing dozens of Indian students queuing up for a job fair at a Tim Horton's outlet in Toronto. The video, shared by Nishat, an Indian student at York University, has garnered significant attention online, emphasizing the challenges faced by international students in Canada.

Nishat, who has been actively searching for a part-time job for over six months, documented his experience attending the job fair. Despite his persistent efforts, he has yet to secure employment. His video provides a firsthand look at the difficulties faced by students like him who are juggling their academic commitments while desperately seeking work to support themselves in a foreign country.

A Glimpse into the Struggle

In his Instagram posts, Nishat shares his ongoing journey of job hunting in Toronto. He described arriving at the Tim Horton's job fair 30 minutes before it was scheduled to begin, only to find a long queue of applicants already in place. His video captures the scene outside the Tim Horton's outlet, showing dozens of Indian students waiting in line, hopeful for a chance to secure employment.

Nishat mentioned that he spent $2 to get his CV printed, in hopes of increasing his chances of landing a job. He emphasized the effort he put into updating his CV thoroughly. Speaking in Hindi in his video, he said, “I updated my CV thoroughly to increase my chances of getting a job. But when I reached Tim Horton’s, a long line was waiting for me.”

The Job Fair Experience

The video further reveals that more than a hundred students had already arrived at the job fair before it even started. Nishat pointed out that even locals, who were passing by, were shocked by the sheer number of applicants. This highlights the intensity of competition for part-time jobs among international students in Canada.

During the job fair, Tim Horton's representatives asked the students about their availability, collected their CVs, and informed them that they would receive an interview call if they were shortlisted. Nishat, after submitting his CV at Tim Horton's, continued his quest by traveling a significant distance to apply for a job at another store. “I don’t know if I will find a job at either store. So this was my day full of struggle,” he remarked in conclusion.

The Bigger Picture

The viral video sheds light on a broader issue affecting many international students in Canada. The high cost of living, combined with limited job opportunities, places immense pressure on students who are trying to balance their studies with part-time work. This struggle is not only financially taxing but also takes a toll on their mental and emotional well-being.

Many international students rely on part-time jobs to cover their living expenses, tuition fees, and other costs associated with studying abroad. However, the intense competition for such jobs means that securing employment is far from guaranteed. This situation is exacerbated by the fact that students are often limited in the number of hours they can legally work while on a study permit.

A Call for Support

Nishat’s video has resonated with many viewers, sparking conversations about the need for better support systems for international students in Canada. There is a growing call for universities, government bodies, and employers to recognize the challenges faced by these students and to provide more opportunities and resources to help them succeed.

For many Indian students in Canada, the dream of studying abroad is intertwined with the hope of gaining valuable work experience and building a better future. However, the reality of the job market can be harsh and disheartening. Nishat’s experience serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience and determination of international students who continue to strive despite the odds stacked against them.

As the video continues to circulate online, it remains to be seen if it will lead to any significant changes or improvements in the support offered to international students. For now, the struggle continues, with students like Nishat forging ahead in their quest for a better life and brighter opportunities in Canada.
