Shannen Doherty, star of Beverly Hills, 90210, dead at 53: media reports
American actress Shannen Doherty, best known for her roles in "Beverly Hills, 90210" and "Charmed," passed away at 53 after a long battle with cancer.
American actress Shannen Doherty, best known for her role as Brenda Walsh on the 1990s television drama "Beverly Hills, 90210," passed away at 53 after a prolonged battle with cancer, according to People magazine on Sunday.
"It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease," Doherty’s publicist Leslie Sloane told the magazine.
Doherty had been open about her struggle with breast cancer, revealing in 2015 that she was undergoing treatment. In 2023, she had a brain tumor removed and shared that the cancer had spread to her bones. Doherty, who had also starred in the movie "Heathers," gained widespread recognition on "90210" for her portrayal of Brenda, an honor roll student from Minnesota trying to fit in with her wealthy classmates.
Her character was part of a notable love triangle with Dylan McKay (Luke Perry) and Kelly Taylor (Jennie Garth). Off-screen, Doherty had conflicts with Garth and other castmates, leading to her departure from "90210" during its fourth season in 1994. The show continued until 2000 without her. In 1998, Aaron Spelling, the producer of "90210," cast Doherty in the supernatural series "Charmed" as Prue Halliwell, the eldest of three sisters with magical powers. The show was successful but was also plagued by reports of behind-the-scenes strife. People magazine described Doherty as "the iconic 'bad girl' of the nineties," noting her reputation for partying, arriving late on set, and feuding with co-stars and producers. In a 2023 podcast, "Let’s Be Clear with Shannen Doherty," she took "full responsibility for her actions" and admitted her behavior "would get a little carried away" in her early 20s.
She also explained that she often voiced her opinions about scripts to Spelling and others, asserting her belief that her opinions should be valued. "I was raised to have an opinion, and that my opinion should be valued, so I just kept on pressing up against that machine, up against men who didn’t really want to hear my opinion," she said on the podcast. Later, she learned "the simple art of diplomacy" and found gentler ways to express her thoughts. Doherty reprised her role as Brenda for "90210" reboots in 2008 and 2019, and said she and Garth had reconciled after maturing and leaving their teenage conflicts behind.
Born in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 12, 1971, Doherty began acting as a child. At age 11, she played Jenny Wilder in the final season of the TV classic "Little House on the Prairie." In 1988, she was cast in the dark comedy film "Heathers," which became a cult classic. Doherty was married three times, most recently to photographer Kurt Iswarienko, from whom she filed for divorce in 2023.
