SpiceJet is set to begin seaplane operations on several routes in 2025.

Nearly four years after SpiceJet first launched its seaplane route, the airline has announced plans to officially begin seaplane services in 2025. On Saturday, under the leadership of Ajay Singh, SpiceJet conducted a demonstration flight from Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada to the Srisailam Dam in Andhra Pradesh. In a statement, the airline shared that it has partnered with De Havilland on seaplane trials across various locations, providing essential engineering, technical, and logistical support.

The seaplane initiative is spearheaded by Avani Singh, daughter of SpiceJet Chairman and Managing Director Ajay Singh, and CEO of Spice Shuttle. She highlighted the transformative potential of seaplanes, especially for a country like India, with its diverse geography, coastlines, and riverine regions that often face infrastructure challenges. "We are excited to be at the forefront of seaplane operations in India," she said.

SpiceJet currently holds rights to operate seaplane services on 20 routes, including locations such as Lakshadweep, Hyderabad, Guwahati, and Shillong, and plans to begin connecting key destinations as soon as the necessary infrastructure is in place. Ajay Singh remarked, "Seaplanes have the potential to revolutionize regional connectivity in India, making remote and beautiful parts of the country more accessible. We are committed to making seaplane operations a reality in India once again."

SpiceJet first introduced the country's inaugural scheduled seaplane service in October 2020, connecting the Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad to the Statue of Unity in Kevadia, Gujarat. However, the service was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The trial flight on Saturday was attended by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Union Minister of Civil Aviation, Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu.
