Deepinder Goyal announces that the new Chief of Staff at Zomato will be required to pay ₹20 lakh to join the company.

Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal is seeking a Chief of Staff, but with an unusual twist. The position comes with no salary for the first year, and the selected candidate will be required to pay ₹20 lakh to the company. Goyal shared a job posting for the role on his X account, writing, "Update: I am looking for a Chief of Staff for myself." The post included a two-page document outlining the expectations for the ideal candidate and instructions on how to apply.

In the posting, Goyal emphasized that the candidate should be “down to earth,” with “zero entitlement,” and should possess qualities such as empathy, common sense, and a strong learning mindset, without excessive prior experience. He clarified that the ₹20 lakh paid by the candidate would be donated to Feeding India, a non-profit organization.

The role involves helping shape the future of Zomato and its affiliated brands, including Blinkit, District, Hyperpure, and Feeding India. Goyal promised that the position would offer "10x more learnings than a 2-year degree from a top management school," despite the unconventional nature of the job. He further explained that the job was designed to be "unattractive for most people," as the focus is on learning rather than financial gain.

In response to the inevitable question about why someone would pay to work, the post stated that applicants should seek the role for the learning opportunities it offers, rather than for the prestige of a high-paying job.

"For the first year, there is no salary, and you will need to pay ₹20 lakh for the chance to work with us," the posting read. "100% of this 'fee' will be donated directly to Feeding India. Additionally, we will contribute ₹50 lakh to a charity of your choice to show we’re not trying to save money. Starting in Year 2, we will offer a salary, one that exceeds ₹50 lakh, but we’ll discuss this at the start of Year 2."

Goyal made it clear that he is looking for learners, not “resume builders,” and that the position is essentially a "fast track learning program." To apply, candidates are asked to send a 200-word cover letter to d@zomato.com.
