India joined the UN General Assembly in supporting a resolution expressing deep concern about Israel's continued occupation of Syria's Golan Heights. The region, seized by Israel in 1967, remains a point of contention. The resolution, titled 'The Syrian Golan' and introduced by Egypt, garnered support with 91 votes in favor, 8 against, and 62 abstentions during the assembly on Tuesday.

Countries voting in favor included India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Malaysia, Maldives, Nepal, Russia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and the United Arab Emirates. Australia, Canada, Israel, the UK, and the US opposed the resolution.

The resolution emphasized concerns regarding Israel's failure to withdraw from the Syrian Golan Heights, a situation at odds with relevant Security Council and General Assembly resolutions. It declared Israel's non-compliance with Security Council resolution 497 (1981), which nullified Israel's decision to impose its laws, jurisdiction, and administration in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights.

Additionally, the resolution deemed the Israeli decision of December 14, 1981, null and void and called on Israel to rescind it. It highlighted the illegality of Israeli settlement construction and other activities in the occupied Syrian Golan since 1967.

The resolution demanded Israel's withdrawal from all occupied Syrian Golan to the June 4, 1967 line, in line with relevant Security Council resolutions. It stressed that the continued occupation and de facto annexation of the Syrian Golan hindered the achievement of a just, comprehensive, and lasting peace in the region.

Expressing grave concern over the halt in the peace process on the Syrian track, the resolution expressed hope for the resumption of peace talks from the point they had reached. The international community's collective call for Israel's compliance with UN resolutions underscores the ongoing complexities and disputes in the Middle East.
