Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi is scheduled to visit Ankara on January 4 to meet with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan. Talks during the meeting are expected to cover the situations in Gaza and Syria, along with discussions on bilateral ties. The visit was initially planned for late November but was postponed due to conflicting schedules between the foreign ministers of both countries. Turkey, while criticizing Israel for its actions in Gaza and advocating for a two-state solution, has maintained commercial ties with Israel despite increased rhetoric. Notably, Turkey does not classify Hamas as a terrorist group, unlike its Western allies. The relationship between Turkey and Iran has historically been complex, particularly in their differing stances on the Syrian civil war, where Ankara supports rebels aiming to oust President Bashar al-Assad, while Tehran supports the government. Despite these differences, efforts have been made to engage in talks for a political solution to the Syrian conflict, and Turkey has also sought to improve relations with Assad as part of a broader regional diplomatic initiative launched in 2020.
