The campaign team for GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy has decided to halt TV advertising spending just weeks before the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary. Despite the traditional importance of TV ads in US political campaigns, Ramaswamy's team is shifting its strategy, emphasizing targeted advertising through methods like direct mail, text messages, phone calls, and door-to-door outreach. The decision to pull back from TV ads comes after an initial significant investment, with planned expenditures of up to $12 million across Iowa and New Hampshire. Ramaswamy's campaign has spent only $2.2 million on TV, digital, and radio ads, and the PAC supporting him has not invested in ads since October. This shift in strategy is notable given the proximity to key indicators of the presidential race in early primary states. Ramaswamy's campaign, trailing in national polls with 3.5% support, aims to be "nimble and hyper-targeted" in its advertising expenditures. The move reflects a data-driven approach to mobilizing voters and conveying Ramaswamy's vision for America. While TV ads remain a significant component of US political campaigns, the campaign's spokesperson, Tricia McLaughlin, stressed the uniqueness of their approach, indicating a departure from the conventional heavy reliance on television advertising. The Iowa caucuses are scheduled for January 15, followed by the New Hampshire primary on January 23. The campaign will continue to invest in other advertising methods, adapting its strategy based on data-driven insights and a focus on engaging identified voters effectively.
