Bank of America introduced the Community Affordable Loan Solution, targeting properties in Black/African American and Hispanic-Latino communities across cities such as Charlotte, Dallas, Detroit, Los Angeles, and Miami. This initiative aims to provide affordable home loans to eligible individuals.
The program, labelled a Special Purpose Credit Program, utilizes credit guidelines based on factors like timely payments for rent, utilities, phone, and auto insurance. Bank of America emphasizes that no mortgage insurance or minimum credit score is required for participation. Eligibility is determined by income and home location, and individuals of any race or ethnicity are encouraged to apply.
Bank of America's new program aligns with its existing $15 billion Community Homeownership Commitment, designed to provide affordable mortgages, grants, and educational opportunities, to help 60,000 individuals and families purchase affordable homes by 2025.
Acknowledging the substantial homeownership gap between White and Black Americans, the National Association of Realtors notes a nearly 30-percentage-point difference. The disparity is also nearly 20% for Hispanic buyers, presenting significant challenges for people of colour in acquiring homes.
AJ Barkley, Head of Neighborhood and Community Lending for Bank of America, emphasized the broader commitment to the served communities, stating that the Community Affordable Loan Solution contributes to making sustained homeownership achievable for more Black and Hispanic families. The initiative is part of Bank of America's dedication to strengthening communities and enabling individuals and families to build wealth through homeownership.
