On Taiwan's military threat claim, China says: ‘This is electoral playbook'

China has accused Taiwan of intentionally exaggerating a military threat from Beijing to gain electoral advantage ahead of the island's presidential and parliamentary elections on January 13. Tensions have escalated, with Taiwan reporting the presence of Chinese fighter jets and warships near the island and balloons crossing the sensitive Taiwan Strait in the run-up to the elections.

What does Beijing say about Taiwan?

According to Chinese Defence Ministry spokesperson Wu Qian, the blame for tensions lies with Taiwan's government, not Beijing. Wu Qian accused the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities of intentionally inflating the alleged "military threat from the mainland" to gain electoral advantage, stating that Taiwan is employing a familiar electoral strategy to manipulate the election. He emphasized that the People's Liberation Army is well-informed about Taiwan's military activities and will take all necessary measures to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity. China expressed opposition to any official or military contact with Taiwan, particularly condemning US arms sales to the island and accusing the United States of manipulating the Taiwan question, calling it a perilous gamble.
