The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified JN.1 as a distinct "variant of interest" due to its rapidly increasing spread but has stated that it poses a "low" global public health risk.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra recorded 129 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday,
"A total of 145 cases of JN.1 variant have been reported till December 28. These samples were collected between November 21 and December 18, 2023," said official sources. The majority of JN.1 variant cases have been reported in Kerala, with the state registering 41 cases of the subvariant, most of which were managed through home isolation, according to official sources.
In Karnataka, 173 fresh cases of Covid-19 and two coronavirus-related deaths were reported on Friday. This brings the total number of active cases in the state to 702. The health bulletin indicated that 37 patients were discharged in the last 24 hours, with a total of 8,349 tests conducted, including 6,400 RTPCR and 1,949 Rapid Antigen tests. The positivity rate stands at 2.07%, while the case fatality rate is 1.15%.
