Japan to accept earthquake relief from US only

Four days post the devastating earthquake on the Noto Peninsula claiming ninety-one lives, Japan, as reported by Nikkei, plans to accept a U.S. rescue team but declines assistance from other nations. Top spokesperson Yoshimasa Hayashi cited the current ground situation and the complexities of receiving aid. Discussions between the U.S. and Japan on deploying soldiers to Noto are ongoing.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida acknowledged sympathy messages and assistance offers from Taiwan and China. With damaged roads hindering rescue efforts, the extent of casualties and damage remains uncertain, potentially marking the worst tragedy since 2016 and perhaps since the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

In 2011, the U.S. played a significant role in disaster relief, deploying 24,000 personnel, 24 ships, and 189 aircraft. While Japan's Ministry of Defence remains open to future assistance, nothing is confirmed. The U.S. has 54,000 personnel in Japan, reflecting the largest U.S. military presence abroad.

Reports from Asahi suggest at least 100 hectares of land flooded from a tsunami triggered by the earthquake, with the potential for further expansion. The situation remains fluid, and a full assessment is pending.

Despite the grim circumstances, Japan's decision to welcome U.S. aid showcases collaborative efforts in times of crisis. Ongoing discussions underscore the nuanced considerations in managing international assistance while dealing with the aftermath of a natural disaster. The coming days will likely see intensified efforts to assess the true scale of the tragedy and facilitate support from both domestic and international partners.
