Biden's infrastructure czar to help lead re-election effort

Mitch Landrieu, Joe Biden's infrastructure czar, is stepping down from his White House role to play a key part in the U.S. president's re-election campaign, aiming to invigorate support for a second term. Biden lauded Landrieu for his efforts in implementing a $1 trillion law focused on constructing bridges, roads, electric vehicle charging stations, and expanding high-speed internet access, emphasizing the administration's capability to accomplish significant initiatives.

Biden's campaign manager, Julie Chavez Rodriguez, highlighted Landrieu's role in showcasing how Biden is investing in America's economic foundation, considering it a crucial element in their re-election strategy. This transition aligns with Biden's intensified campaign leading up to the November elections, positioning him for a potential rematch with former President Donald Trump, who currently leads polls for the Republican nomination.

While Biden seeks to leverage his economic initiatives and the broader goal of rebuilding America, close polls have prompted a closer examination of his campaign. Former President Barack Obama, Biden's eight-year partner as vice president, recently met with Biden amid concerns about Trump's potential resurgence, emphasizing the need for Biden's campaign to operate independently of White House influence.

Biden's administration has touted over 40,000 nationwide projects, but their completion is expected to span three to five years. During his tenure as a White House adviser, Landrieu was restricted by law from making any statements linking the ongoing projects to Biden's re-election efforts.

Biden frames the 2024 presidential election as a critical test for democracy, especially in the aftermath of Trump's attempts to undermine the 2020 election. Despite facing federal and state criminal charges related to those efforts, Trump denies any wrongdoing. Biden also underscores the nation's post-pandemic economic recovery, highlighting low unemployment and stabilized inflation, even as consumer confidence remains tempered by concerns about rising prices.

Trump, currently facing charges related to election subversion, continues to assert that a Biden presidency would disrupt the economy, echoing a theme from the 2020 election. Recent Reuters/Ipsos polling indicates a tight race, with 45% favouring Trump's handling of the economy compared to 33% for Biden.
