Donald Trump warns Europe that the US ‘will never come to help’ them if they are under attack

A senior European commissioner disclosed that in 2020, former US President Donald Trump made concerning remarks to the president of the European Commission, suggesting that the US would abandon Europe in the event of an attack and asserting that NATO was obsolete.

Thierry Breton, a French European commissioner overseeing the internal market, including defence, recounted the exchange between Trump and Ursula von der Leyen during a session at the European Parliament. Breton stated that he learned about the conversation from various news sources.

According to Breton, Trump conveyed to Von der Leyen, who was Germany's defence minister at the time, at the World Economic Forum in Davos in 2020, "You must realize that if Europe comes under attack, we will never come to your aid or support you."

Breton also reported Trump declaring, "NATO is dead, and we will leave, we will quit NATO." The Jerusalem Post added that Trump claimed, "And by the way, you owe me $400 billion because you Germans didn't pay what you were supposed to for defence."

Von der Leyen was among European leaders who resisted Trump's pressure to increase defence spending and NATO contributions.

Trump's antagonism toward NATO and apparent alignment with Russian President Vladimir Putin raised concerns about his foreign policy and commitment to the transatlantic alliance. He asserted that he understood Putin and waited until leaving office before allowing a potential invasion of Ukraine.

Breton emphasized that Trump's 2020 statements served as a significant wake-up call, cautioning, "He may come back."

Despite facing legal challenges, criminal charges, and civil lawsuits, Trump is seeking the Republican presidential nomination and leads polls among Republican voters. There is also a close race indicated between Trump and Democratic incumbent Joe Biden in hypothetical general elections.

Breton, expressing a sense of self-reliance, stated, "Now more than ever, we know that we are on our own, of course." He emphasized the need for increased spending on arms to be prepared for any potential developments, despite being a member of NATO and having allies.
