Pakistan warns Iran of serious 'consequences' following missile & drone attack on terror bases in Balochistan

On Wednesday, Pakistan issued a stern warning to Iran following missile and drone attacks on two bases of the Balochi militant group Jaish al Adl in Balochistan province. The attacks resulted in the tragic death of two children and injuries to three others. The Iranian action prompted Pakistan to condemn it as a "violation of its airspace," leading to the summoning of the Iranian charge d'affaires to the foreign ministry.

Iran claimed that the strikes specifically targeted the strongholds of the Jaish al-Adl terrorist group in Pakistan, located in an area referred to as "Green Mountain." Pakistan vehemently protested the incident, describing it as an "unprovoked violation of its sovereignty" and warning of "serious consequences." The Foreign Office expressed concern that the attack occurred despite established communication channels between the two countries.

The timing of the strikes coincided with a meeting between Pakistan's caretaker Prime Minister and the Iranian Foreign Minister at the World Economic Forum in Davos. The Foreign Office highlighted the need for coordinated action against terrorism, emphasizing that unilateral acts undermine bilateral trust.

Jaish al-Adl, founded in 2012, is a Sunni militant group primarily operating in Pakistan. While Iran has previously engaged in border conflicts with the group, the recent missile and drone attack on Pakistani soil is unprecedented. The Balochistan province has been a troubled region, witnessing numerous terror attacks and serving as a base for banned religious terror and separatist outfits targeting Pakistan's security personnel and installations.
