Diabetes Care Falters for Rural Patients: Study.
Diabetes poses a global health challenge, impacting blood sugar regulation. Lifestyle changes, medication, and awareness are crucial for management.
Living in small towns with fewer than 50,000 people increases the risk of diabetes-related complications, including heart attacks and kidney disease. A recent study conducted by Dr. Rozalina McCoy, an associate professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, found that individuals in rural areas are 15% more likely to experience dangerously low blood sugar levels, indicating inadequate diabetes management. The research measured 11 complications, revealing a higher risk for rural residents in eight of them compared to their urban counterparts. The findings emphasize the need for improved diabetes care and management strategies in rural communities to mitigate complications and enhance overall health outcomes.
