Trump says he feels mentally sharp after Haley attacks his age, gaffes

On Saturday, Donald Trump responded to recent criticisms about his age and verbal slips by asserting that he feels mentally sharper now than he did two decades ago. The comments came in reaction to jabs from Republican presidential contender Nikki Haley, who, like Trump, has advocated for cognitive tests for presidential candidates, pointing to the ages of both Trump (77) and Democratic President Joe Biden (81).

Trump, addressing a rally in Nevada ahead of the upcoming Republican presidential caucus on Feb. 8, aimed to counter Haley's accusations of confusion and questioned his fitness for the presidency. Having recently confused Haley with Nancy Pelosi and made other verbal miscues, Trump is almost certain to secure Nevada's 26 delegates since Haley is not participating in the caucus. He focused on sidelining Haley in the Republican race and positioning for a potential rematch with Biden in November.

Despite Trump's back-to-back victories in the Iowa and New Hampshire Republican contests, he is frustrated with Haley's refusal to exit the race. His campaign, along with allies, is actively trying to pressure her to withdraw before the next crucial primary in South Carolina on Feb. 24. Trump even threatened to distance himself from donors supporting Haley.

Haley, undeterred, pledged to continue campaigning in South Carolina and beyond. In response to Trump's challenge for a cognitive test, she suggested that he face her on the debate stage, considering it the ultimate test for mental competency in a presidential candidate. However, Trump has declined to participate in any Republican debates and refused to engage in a debate with Haley.

In his Nevada speech, Trump repeated a derogatory nickname for Haley, calling her a "birdbrain" and accused the conservative Republican of being "almost a radical left Democrat." Emphasizing his lead in South Carolina polls, Trump declared his desire to swiftly conclude the nomination fight.

After Trump's victory in the New Hampshire primary, the Biden campaign acknowledged Trump's likely Republican nomination. Trump, on the other hand, directed much of his speech towards Biden, focusing on the issue of immigration and the southern border. He labelled the surge in illegal crossings as a "catastrophe" and an "invasion," highlighting the border as an "open wound."

Simultaneously, Biden and his campaign escalated their attacks on Trump, portraying him as a threat to U.S. democracy and linking him to the U.S. Supreme Court's 2022 decision to curtail federal abortion rights, an issue believed to have negatively impacted Republicans in the 2022 midterm elections.
