India Aims to Collect $1.7 Billion From Online Gambling Tax in FY25

In New Delhi, India, Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra revealed plans to collect 140 billion rupees ($1.7 billion) through goods and services tax (GST) in the upcoming fiscal year by levying a 28% tax on online gambling companies. This move, implemented in October, impacted the $1.5 billion industry and aimed to address addiction concerns. For the current fiscal year ending on March 31, the government anticipates collecting 75 billion rupees, a significant increase from the previous year's 16 billion rupees. Malhotra noted a stable industry but reserved judgment. A review of the tax framework for online gambling companies is slated for April.
