U.S. launches strikes in Iraq, Syria, nearly 40 reported killed

In response to a deadly attack on U.S. troops, the United States conducted airstrikes in Iraq and Syria, targeting more than 85 locations associated with Iran's Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) and its supported militias. The strikes utilized long-range B-1 bombers, resulting in the reported deaths of nearly 40 people. These actions were a direct response to an attack by Iran-backed militants in Jordan. The conflict has escalated in the region, intertwining with the ongoing hostilities between Israel and Hamas.

Iran condemned the airstrikes, labelling them as a strategic mistake that would only increase tension and instability. Iraq formally protested, emphasizing its refusal to be a battleground for settling scores between warring countries. The Popular Mobilization Forces in Iraq, including Iran-backed groups, reported casualties among its members, while Syria witnessed 23 deaths among those guarding targeted locations.

Despite the military operations, the Pentagon clarified its stance, expressing a lack of desire for war with Iran. U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin conveyed that the strikes were the start of the response, emphasizing the need to defend American forces.

Iran, backing groups like Hamas, has sought to stay out of direct conflict while supporting various factions across the region. President Ebrahim Raisi stated that Iran would not initiate a war but would respond strongly to any aggression. The Iranian ambassador in Damascus downplayed the airstrikes, denying hits on Iran-linked targets and suggesting an aim to destroy Syria's civil infrastructure.

The United States informed Iraq before the strikes, but Baghdad accused the U.S. of deception, claiming unfounded coordination. Iran's President reiterated a commitment to avoid starting a war while emphasizing a strong response to aggression.

Amid the international response, Britain supported the U.S., considering it a steadfast ally, while Poland acknowledged the U.S. strikes as a result of Iranian proxies "playing with fire."

The U.S. military disclosed that the airstrikes targeted command centres, storage facilities, and supply chains, aiming to disrupt militant activities. U.S. troops had faced over 160 attacks since October 7, prompting retaliatory measures. The drone responsible for a previous attack in Jordan was attributed to Iran, according to U.S. officials.

President Biden stated that the response had commenced and would continue as deemed necessary. Criticism arose from some quarters, with concerns about the perceived delay and the level of response to Iran's actions. Iranian advisers continue to assist armed groups in Iraq and Syria, where the U.S. maintains a military presence.
