US, Russia clash at UN over North Korea, Patriot missiles in Ukraine

The United States, on Tuesday, accused Russia of launching a minimum of nine missiles supplied by North Korea towards Ukraine. Meanwhile, Moscow retaliated by branding Washington as a "direct accomplice" in the recent downing of a Russian military transport aircraft. The exchange of allegations occurred during a U.N. Security Council meeting on Ukraine, at the request of Moscow. Russia's invasion of neighbouring Ukraine almost two years ago set the stage for these tensions.

During the Security Council session, Deputy U.S. Ambassador Robert Wood pointed out, "Russia has, to date, fired DPRK-provided ballistic missiles at Ukraine on at least nine occasions." Wood emphasized the need for accountability, stating, "Russia and the DPRK must answer for their actions, which contravene longstanding obligations outlined in UN Security Council resolutions."

Despite denial from both Moscow and Pyongyang, they pledged to deepen military ties last year. Since the onset of the conflict with Ukraine, Russia has bolstered relationships with countries adversarial to the United States, such as North Korea and Iran, causing unease in the West.

On January 24, a Russian Air Force Il-76 crashed. Russia claimed that all 74 passengers, including 65 Ukrainian soldiers being transported for a prisoner exchange, perished, blaming Kyiv for the incident. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia informed the Security Council, "We possess undeniable evidence implicating the use of a Patriot surface-to-air missile in the attack, leaving no doubt that Washington played a direct role in this crime."

Last week, Russian investigators alleged that Ukraine's military downed the aircraft using U.S.-manufactured Patriot surface-to-air missiles. After Ukraine reportedly killed at least 28 people in a strike using Western-supplied rockets on a bakery and restaurant in Russian-controlled eastern Ukraine, Russia requested the council meeting on Tuesday.

Senior Ukrainian diplomat Serhii Dvornyk accused Russia of exploiting the Security Council "to spread falsehoods." Wood, unable to independently verify the information due to a lack of independent media coverage, expressed regret over civilian casualties. He reiterated, "Let me be clear: Russia is the sole aggressor in this conflict and holds power to terminate it."
