Allegations of Indian interference in Canada elections baseless: MEA
According to Canadian media reports, the country's federal commission of inquiry into foreign interference is looking to examine allegations of “meddling by India” in the last two general elections.
On Thursday, India strongly dismissed claims of interference in Canadian elections, asserting that the core issue was Canada's meddling in India's internal affairs. Reports from Canadian media suggested that the Federal Commission of Inquiry in Canada was investigating allegations of Indian interference in the last two general elections. The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, stated, "We strongly reject all such baseless allegations of Indian interference in Canadian elections." The Canadian Commission primarily focuses on examining possible interference by China, Russia, and other foreign states or non-state actors in the 2019 and 2021 federal elections.
Jaiswal emphasized that it is not India's policy to interfere in other countries' democratic processes. On the contrary, he highlighted that Canada has been interfering in India's internal affairs, a matter consistently raised by India with Canada. Jaiswal urged Canada to take effective measures to address India's core concerns. The response comes amid increased scrutiny of foreign interference in elections globally, with the Canadian Commission specifically investigating allegations involving various countries, including India.
