Vladimir Putin gifts luxury limousine to North Korea's Kim Jong Un in potential UN sanctions violation
Putin gifts luxurious limousine to Kim Jong Un, deepening ties, but sparking UN backlash.
Russian President Vladimir Putin presented North Korean leader Kim Jong Un with a luxurious Russian-made limousine for personal use, as announced by the two countries on Tuesday. This gesture highlights the strengthening ties between them but is expected to provoke a negative response from the United Nations.
The Kremlin stated that Putin gave Kim the Russian Aurus limousine because the North Korean leader had admired the armoured vehicle during his previous visit to Russia. Kim was also photographed sitting inside the car alongside the Russian president at the Vostochny Cosmodrome.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov explained, "During the DPRK leader's visit to the Vostochny cosmodrome, he looked at this car, and President Putin personally showed it to him. Like many people, Kim liked this car." However, some observers have pointed out that sending the luxury vehicle to North Korea could violate UN sanctions. A previous UN resolution prohibits sending luxury items to North Korea to pressure the country to give up its nuclear weapons.
The limousine was received by Kim Yo Jong, Kim Jong Un's sister and a senior official in North Korea, who expressed gratitude to the Russian president, stating that the car symbolizes the strong relationship between the two nations.
The carmaker's website describes the vehicle as Russia's first full-size luxury sedan, also used as Putin's presidential car.
Regarding potential UN sanctions violations, Russia and North Korea have denied wrongdoing. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova argued on Telegram, "I think those who champion international legal purity should explain what harm is caused by illegal sanctions, which prevent people around the world from obtaining food, medicine, and vaccines due to the West's sanctions war."
Despite the tensions between the United States and both North Korea and Russia for different reasons—North Korea's nuclear weapons and Russia's conflict with the US ally Ukraine— the two countries have forged a partnership, expanding their arsenals amid US and UN sanctions.
