German minister wants to use proceeds from frozen Russian assets for Ukraine.

SAO PAULO, Feb 28 - German Finance Minister Christian Lindner expressed support for directing interest from frozen Russian assets towards aiding Ukraine in its conflict with Moscow. At a Group of 20 meeting in Sao Paulo, finance ministers discussed bolstering Ukraine and increasing pressure on Russia.

Lindner stated, "The European Union is exploring ways to utilize proceeds from Russian assets for Ukraine. This is a pragmatic, legally sound step that can be swiftly executed, and that's where our focus lies." He estimated that utilizing interest from the frozen assets could mobilize a single-digit billion sum for Kyiv and anticipated an EU proposal soon.

The United States is urging Western allies to unlock the assets' value. U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen mentioned that the G20 is assessing options regarding around $285 billion in Russian assets immobilized in 2022, along with associated risks.

Additionally, Lindner emphasized that Germany would insist on including mention of geopolitical conflicts like the one in Ukraine in a G20 communique.
