Three Red Sea Underwater Data Cables Have Been Cut as Houthi Attacks Continue in the Vital Waterway

In Dubai, officials report that three underwater cables in the Red Sea, crucial for global internet and telecommunications, have been severed amid ongoing targeting by Yemen's Houthi rebels. The method of sabotage remains unclear, raising concerns about the rebels' campaign impacting these vital communication links. Simultaneously, a Houthi missile attack ignited a ship in the Gulf of Aden, though injuries were avoided.

The damaged cables, including Asia-Africa-Europe 1, Europe India Gateway, Seacom, and TGN-Gulf, are integral to global data transmission through the Red Sea. HGC Global Communications notes a 25% disruption in Red Sea traffic and deems the route vital for data flow between Asia and Europe. To counter the impact, rerouting measures have been initiated.

However, there is confusion about the Seacom-TGN-Gulf line, which HGC Global Communications initially described as two separate cables. Clarifying, subsea cable expert Tim Stronge highlights it as a single cable affected at the cut location. Responding to queries, Seacom revealed initial tests indicating the affected segment lies within Yemeni maritime jurisdictions in the Southern Red Sea. Despite rerouting efforts, some services are temporarily down, emphasizing the far-reaching consequences of disruptions in both maritime and telecommunication infrastructures. The incidents exacerbate concerns surrounding the already disrupted Red Sea route, crucial for global cargo and energy shipments.
