Navalny died his own death, Russian spy chief says.
Russian SVR chief Naryshkin stated that Alexei Navalny died a natural death, criticizing Western reactions to the Kremlin critic's passing.
MOSCOW - Sergei Naryshkin, the head of Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), reportedly stated on Thursday that Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny passed away from natural causes.
"I don't believe there was any deliberate plan, but unfortunately, people are mortal, and they eventually succumb to death. Navalny passed away naturally," Russian news agencies quoted him as telling a television interviewer.
Naryshkin was responding to a question about potential Western involvement in Navalny's death.
He criticized Western reactions to Navalny's passing, calling them "disgusting."
"Seeing the West engage in macabre celebrations around Navalny's death is quite disgusting," he said. "It's immoral, base, and unethical. What more is there to say? It was entirely predictable."
Navalny, the most prominent critic of Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin, died last month at the age of 47 in a penal colony in the Arctic. His supporters claimed he was murdered, which the Kremlin has denied.
