India Conducts First Test Flight of Domestically Developed Missile That Can Carry Multiple Warheads
India says it has successfully conducted its first test flight of a domestically developed missile that can carry multiple warheads
India celebrated a significant achievement as Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the successful maiden test flight of a domestically developed missile capable of carrying multiple warheads. Modi shared the news on X, formerly known as Twitter, highlighting the missile's feature of multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicles.
Since the 1990s, India has been actively advancing its medium- and long-range missile systems, a response to the escalating strategic competition with China. The year 2021 witnessed the successful testing of Agni-5, an intercontinental ballistic missile with nuclear capabilities, boasting a remarkable range of 5,000 kilometres (3,125 miles). This missile is believed to have the potential to target a substantial portion of China's territory. Agni missiles, categorized as long-range surface-to-surface ballistic missiles, enhance India's defence capabilities significantly.
The strategic prowess of India's missile program extends beyond China, allowing the nation to strike anywhere in neighbouring Pakistan, a historical adversary against which India has engaged in three wars since gaining independence from British colonial rule in 1947.
This noteworthy achievement underlines India's commitment to technological advancements in the defence sector, securing its position as a formidable force in missile technology. The successful test marks a pivotal moment in India's pursuit of self-reliance in defence capabilities and reinforces its readiness to address evolving geopolitical challenges in the region.
