India Conducts First Flight Test of Domestic Missile

India marked a significant achievement as it successfully conducted the inaugural flight test of a domestically developed missile featuring Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology, as announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday. The country's scientists integrated this advanced technology into the Agni-V platform, a part of India's nuclear-capable Agni missile series.

MIRV technology enables a single missile to deliver multiple warheads to distinct targets, enhancing strategic capabilities. Agni-V, with a remarkable range of 5000 km (3100 miles), positions itself as India's primary candidate for the Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) long-range category. Notably, major global powers such as the United States, Britain, France, China, and Russia already deploy MIRV missiles. Pakistan, too, conducted a test in 2017, according to the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation, a Washington-based non-profit advocacy group.

The credit for the development of the Indian MIRV missile goes to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the country's military research arm. This successful test represents a notable stride in India's defence capabilities and underscores its commitment to advancing indigenous technology in the realm of missile systems. The integration of MIRV technology adds a layer of sophistication to India's strategic deterrence capabilities, positioning it among the nations with cutting-edge missile technology.
