Elon Musk Takes Another Swing at OpenAI, Makes XAI's Grok Chatbot Open-Source

Elon Musk announced on Monday that his AI startup xAI would open-source its ChatGPT challenger, "Grok," this week. This move comes shortly after Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the organization of deviating from its original non-profit mission in favour of a for-profit model.

Musk, a vocal critic of big tech companies like Google profiting from AI technology, initiated the lawsuit against Microsoft-backed OpenAI, which he co-founded in 2015. The legal dispute intensified when OpenAI released emails suggesting Musk's support for a for-profit entity and a potential merger with Tesla to boost financial gains.

The decision to open-source Grok aligns xAI with companies like Meta and Mistral, both of which have embraced open-source AI models. Google has also contributed by releasing its AI model, Gemma, allowing external developers to customize it.

Tech investors, including Vinod Khosla and Marc Andreessen, engaged in debates about open-sourcing AI models following Musk's legal actions against OpenAI. While open sourcing-can accelerate innovation, concerns have been raised about potential misuse, such as the creation of harmful weapons or the development of uncontrollable super-intelligence.

Elon Musk, expressing a preference for open-source AI at Britain's AI Safety Summit in the past, aims to establish a third-party referee overseeing AI development to address concerns promptly.

In an attempt to offer an alternative to OpenAI and Google, Musk launched xAI last year, focusing on creating a "maximum truth-seeking AI." The introduction of Grok for Premium+ subscribers of X marked a significant step in this direction.
