Central government implements the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA)

The Ministry of Home Affairs has officially released the rules for the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), marking a significant step towards its nationwide enforcement. The CAA simplifies the process for Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Christian, and Parsi refugees from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan to obtain Indian citizenship.

In an announcement on the ministry's spokesperson's X platform, it was revealed that the application process for citizenship will be conducted entirely online. The official statement read, "Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) will be notified today, the Rules under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA-2019). These rules, called the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024 will enable the persons eligible under CAA-2019 to apply for a grant of Indian citizenship. The applications will be submitted in a completely online mode for which a web portal has been provided."

This development follows Union Home Minister Amit Shah's earlier declaration that the law would be operational before the Lok Sabha elections. The primary objective of the CAA is to grant citizenship to non-Muslim migrants from the mentioned countries who arrived in India before December 31, 2014. The online application process introduces a streamlined approach to facilitate eligible individuals in seeking Indian citizenship under the provisions of the CAA.
