More than a fifth of UK adults not looking for work

The UK's economic inactivity rate stood at 21.8% between November and January, slightly higher than the previous year. This figure indicates that 9.2 million individuals aged 16 to 64 are neither employed nor actively seeking employment, surpassing pre-pandemic levels by over 700,000.

Concerns about workforce shortages affecting the UK economy have escalated, particularly as both major political parties aim to boost growth amid an upcoming general election. While the country officially entered a recession at the end of the previous year, unemployment levels have remained stable.

Persistently high numbers of economically inactive individuals have been observed since the pandemic's onset. Various reasons contribute to economic inactivity, including long-term illness, student status, caregiving responsibilities, disability, early retirement, and discouragement from seeking work.

Notably, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) highlighted an increase in economic inactivity among individuals aged 16 to 34, while those aged 35 to 64 saw a decline. The government, particularly Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, has introduced measures to address workforce shortages, such as lowering National Insurance Contributions and extending free childcare services.

Business groups, however, argue that more comprehensive strategies are required to address the UK's long-term economic challenges, emphasizing the need to tackle skills shortages and enhance labour force participation. The disconnect between employers and potential workers remains a significant challenge for sustained economic growth.
