UK PM Rishi Sunak Says Top Party Donor's Remorse Accepted After Row Over Racist Remark

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has acknowledged the apology of Frank Hester, a top donor to the Conservative Party, following a controversy over racist remarks. Hester, who contributed £10 million ($12.8 million) to the party in the past year, apologized after making comments about Diane Abbott, the country's longest-serving Black lawmaker, suggesting she "should be shot" and expressing a desire to "hate all Black women." Hester claimed the comments from 2019 were rude but unrelated to gender or skin colour.

Initially refraining from passing judgment, Sunak's spokesperson later labelled the remarks "racist and wrong." Opposition parties urged the Conservatives to return Hester's donations. Sunak eventually stated that the comments were indeed racist and that Hester's remorse should be accepted.

Junior business minister Kevin Hollinrake, citing Hester's apology, argued against returning the donated funds. When asked about accepting another £10 million from Hester, Hollinrake indicated a willingness, emphasizing the belief that Hester is not a racist.

The incident has further fueled internal conflicts within the Conservative Party over racism, with a previous suspension of a party member for controversial remarks about London's Muslim mayor. Opposition leader Keir Starmer criticized Sunak's handling of the situation, accusing him of inconsistency on issues of racism and misogyny and highlighting perceived weaknesses in leadership. The political tensions come amid preparations for an anticipated national election later this year.
