CEC announces, elections will be held in Jammu and Kashmir immediately after the Lok Sabha elections.
Rajiv Kumar affirmed the Election Commission's dedication to holding Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir promptly following the Lok Sabha elections.
The Chief Election Commissioner, Rajiv Kumar, stated on Saturday that the assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir will take place after the Lok Sabha polls.
During a press conference on Saturday, Kumar affirmed the Election Commission's dedication to holding Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir promptly following the Lok Sabha elections.
Anticipation was high for the announcement of elections in the Union territory, which has not seen elections since 2014. When questioned about why the assembly elections aren't coinciding with the general elections, Kumar explained that ensuring security forces for every candidate is unfeasible when elections are happening nationwide. He mentioned the amendment to the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act in December 2023, following a delimitation exercise, which set the Election Commission's timeline in motion. Kumar elaborated on the discrepancy between the reorganisation act and the delimitation process, noting that this was rectified in December 2023, initiating the timeline for the Election Commission.
Despite the desire expressed by all parties in Jammu and Kashmir for simultaneous Assembly and parliamentary polls, logistical challenges made it impractical, as each Assembly segment would have multiple candidates necessitating extensive security arrangements.
The Election Commission did release the schedule for the Lok Sabha elections in J&K, with polling scheduled for April 19, April 26, May 7, May 13, and May 20 in five states. Ladakh is set to go to polls on May 20.
Specifically, Udhampur and Jammu will vote on April 19 and 26, Anantnag-Rajouri on May 7, Srinagar on May 13, and Baramulla on May 20. Vote counting will occur on June 4.
