Additionally, one borrower has accumulated interest alone totalling nearly £55,000. These statistics were disclosed by the Student Loans Company (SLC) in response to a Freedom of Information (FOI) request from the BBC.

The SLC report highlights that graduates in England typically leave university burdened with an average debt of £44,940. These revelations have stirred concern among student organizations, with some labelling the figures as "truly eye-watering". The National Union of Students (NUS) has also raised questions about the current university funding system in light of this data.

Ben Waltmann, an economist at the Institute for Fiscal Studies, noted that while these extreme cases are noteworthy, they are not reflective of the typical graduate experience. He emphasized that such exorbitant debts are "highly unusual" and should not be considered representative of most graduates' situations.

The disclosure of these staggering figures underscores the ongoing debate surrounding student debt and university financing in the UK, prompting calls for a reevaluation of the existing system to ensure it remains equitable and sustainable for all students.
