Anna Hazare reacts to Arvind Kejriwal's arrest: ‘Own deeds’
Anna Hazare criticizes Arvind Kejriwal's arrest by Enforcement Directorate, citing Kejriwal's shift to alcohol policies from anti-liquor activism.
Anna Hazare and Arvind Kejriwal conducted numerous hunger strikes during the Lokpal agitation. Social activist Anna Hazare, a key figure in the early 2010s Lokpal movement alongside Arvind Kejriwal, expressed disappointment on Friday over Kejriwal's arrest by the Enforcement Directorate, attributing it to Kejriwal's actions.
The Maharashtra-based activist, who rose to prominence as the face of the anti-corruption campaign, revealed his dismay at Kejriwal's shift in focus to formulating alcohol policies, despite their past efforts against alcohol consumption.
"I am deeply saddened by the fact that Arvind Kejriwal, once my ally in the anti-liquor movement, is now involved in shaping liquor policies. His arrest is a consequence of his actions," Hazare remarked.
During their agitation, Hazare and Kejriwal undertook several hunger strikes demanding the establishment of an anti-corruption ombudsman, Lokpal, from the Congress-led central government. Their movement garnered support from millions of people. However, following the decline of the protest, Kejriwal and other members of the India Against Corruption non-profit formed the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
Hazare, who had always maintained that the movement was non-political, expressed dissatisfaction with Kejriwal's decision to enter politics through the AAP.
The Enforcement Directorate arrested Kejriwal on Thursday night in a case related to money laundering linked to the excise policy. This marks the first time a serving chief minister has been arrested in India.
The Aam Aadmi Party stated that Kejriwal will not resign from his post and will continue to run the government from jail. However, the Bharatiya Janata Party has demanded his resignation on ethical grounds.
On Thursday night, a 10-member ED team raided Kejriwal's residence and arrested him after a two-hour search. The agency took action against Kejriwal after he failed to appear for nine summonses.
Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party has alleged that the central government has placed Kejriwal's family under "house arrest" and has organized a large-scale protest in the national capital against his arrest.
