High Court Orders Temporary Suspension of Telegram's Services in Spain
The Supreme Court ordered temporary suspension of Telegram services in Spain, citing reasons for judicial concerns.
Spain's High Court has mandated the suspension of Telegram's messaging services within the country due to complaints from media entities regarding unauthorized content uploads. According to a court insider, this decision follows grievances raised by media conglomerates such as Atresmedia, EGEDA, Mediaset, and Telefonica. Effective Monday, Telegram's usage in Spain will undergo temporary suspension as per the court's directive.
Judge Santiago Pedraz has sanctioned this measure pending an investigation into the allegations. The responsibility for enforcing the suspension rests with mobile service providers, as stated by the court source. Despite requests for comments, both Telegram and a spokesperson from the High Court remained silent.
Telegram holds the position of the fourth most utilized messaging platform in Spain, as per the CNMC (National Commission on Markets and Competition). Approximately 19% of Spaniards surveyed by CNMC reported using Telegram. Globally, the company boasted over 700 million monthly active users in 2023.
The court's decision marks a significant development in the ongoing debate surrounding digital content regulation and the responsibilities of online platforms. With the suspension of Telegram's services, the case underscores the challenges faced by authorities in balancing freedom of expression with the protection of intellectual property rights in the digital age.
