UN wades into row over Arvind Kejriwal's arrest, Congress's bank accounts: ‘Hope that in India…’

A day after India denounced Washington's call for fairness in legal cases concerning opposition parties as "unwarranted" and "unacceptable," the United Nations has stepped into the fray. According to PTI, the UN expressed its hope that all individuals would be able to exercise their right to vote freely and fairly in India's parliamentary elections. Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, emphasized the importance of safeguarding political and civil rights, ensuring that everyone can vote without interference.

The controversy surrounding the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the allegations of the Congress party regarding the freezing of their bank accounts before the Lok Sabha elections prompted the UN's response. Dujarric reiterated the UN's stance on protecting electoral integrity in all countries holding elections.

Meanwhile, the United States has also weighed in on the matter, making two comments regarding Kejriwal's arrest and the freezing of the Congress party's bank accounts. A State Department spokesperson emphasized the importance of a fair legal process and expressed concern over reports of Kejriwal's arrest. However, India reacted strongly to the US statements, summoning the acting US deputy chief of mission in New Delhi in protest.
