AAP MP Sanjay Singh Gets Bail After 6 Months In Jail In Liquor Policy Case

The Supreme Court of India granted bail to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh and raised serious questions to the Enforcement Directorate (ED), the agency that arrested him, regarding his prolonged detention without trial or the recovery of the alleged bribe of ₹2 crore. The court noted that no money had been recovered, and there was no evidence of the alleged bribes received by the AAP for allotting liquor licenses to the 'South Group', despite the ED's claim that the party received ₹600 crore in bribes.

The court directed the Additional Solicitor General to discuss with the ED and determine if Mr. Singh's custody was necessary at this stage. However, the ED stated that it did not seek his custody.

The court also mentioned that Dinesh Arora, an accused who turned approver, did not initially implicate Mr. Singh in his statements. Mr. Singh had been in Tihar Jail since his arrest in October in connection with the alleged liquor policy scam, which has caused upheaval within the opposition party.

Mr Singh was arrested on charges of money laundering linked to the alleged scam. His previous bail applications, including one in the Delhi High Court, were rejected. The High Court had stated that there were no grounds for relief.

Finally, the Supreme Court granted bail, allowing Mr. Singh to participate in political activities, including campaigning for the AAP, with the condition that he refrain from commenting on the investigation. The court emphasized that this decision should not be considered a precedent in similar cases.

The news of Mr. Singh's release was welcomed by his colleague Atishi, who posted "satyameva jayate" (truth alone triumphs) on social media. Atishi has been leading the AAP's response to the arrests and protests of innocence since Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was arrested.

The alleged Delhi liquor policy scam involved an excessively high-profit margin for liquor retailers and wholesalers, with a portion of the profits allegedly used as bribes to fund AAP's election campaigns. Chief Minister Kejriwal was arrested and accused of being the mastermind behind the scam, a charge he denies. He remains in Tihar Jail until April 15.
