The CIA has reportedly warned Israel about a potential major military retaliation from Iran within 48 hours following an Israeli airstrike that destroyed an Iranian consulate in Syria. The strike killed many Iranian officials and generals. Iranian leaders, including President Ebraham Raisi, have vowed to retaliate, stating that the attack "will not remain without answer."
The US is concerned that this strike could lead to new attacks on American troops by Iranian-backed militias in Iraq and Syria. Israel's escalation by targeting an Iranian diplomatic station has raised fears of the conflict with Hamas spilling over into the broader Middle East region.
The US, Britain, and France opposed a UN Security Council statement condemning an attack on Iran's embassy compound in Syria, citing unclear facts about the incident and Israel not claiming responsibility.
The strike in Damascus killed 12 people, including senior commanders of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) for Syria and Lebanon, as well as an officer of the Hezbollah militia in Lebanon. Iran's assertion that the US is responsible for Israeli actions could end the pause in militia attacks on US forces since early February.
The IRGC confirmed the deaths of seven Iranian military advisers in the strike, including a senior Quds Force commander. Hezbollah expressed condolences and criticized Israel, while a Hezbollah member was also killed in the attack.
The Biden administration denies prior knowledge of the airstrike but maintains close ties with Israel's military. Analysts warn that if Israel's targeting of Iranian operatives leads to deeper hostilities, the US may be drawn into a larger regional conflict. The strike is considered a strategic blow to Tehran, risking further regional escalation.
Iranian leaders have vowed revenge, with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stating that Israel's defeats will bring it closer to collapse. A funeral was held for the slain Revolutionary Guard members in Damascus, with a main ceremony planned in Iran during al-Quds Day.
Iran-backed militias had refrained from attacking US bases after a US drone strike in January, but tensions remain high. Israel has escalated its strikes on Iran-linked targets in Syria and Lebanon, reportedly killing numerous IRGC operatives and Hezbollah members.
