Text book revision: NCERT drops some references to Babri demolition, Gujarat riots, Manipur
NCERT revises Class 11 and 12 textbooks, dropping references to Babri Masjid, Gujarat riots, and Manipur, aligning with recent political developments in India.
In the latest round of revisions made public by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) in its textbooks for Class 11 and 12, several significant changes have been documented. These changes, not yet reflected in online textbooks but reportedly to be updated soon, include dropping references to sensitive historical events and clarifying India's stance on certain political issues. In the revised content, references to the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, the mention of Muslims killed in the Gujarat riots, references to Manipur, and clarifications regarding India's stand on Jammu and Kashmir have been altered or removed.
The NCERT states that these changes are made in response to the latest developments in politics and to align with recent court verdicts. For example, in the Class 11 political science textbook, references to the Gujarat riots have been dropped. Similarly, in the Class 11 political science textbook's chapter on Secularism, the reference to Muslims killed in post-Godhra riots has been removed. The NCERT has justified these changes by stating that they aim to present a more balanced view of historical events and to avoid singling out specific communities. Additionally, in Chapter 8 of the Class 12 political science textbook, the NCERT has revised a question regarding the legacy of the Ram Janambhoomi movement and the Ayodhya demolition, changing it to focus solely on the legacy of the movement.
Similarly, references to the Babri Masjid demolition have been altered to emphasize the legal and political dispute over the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya, leading to the construction of the Ram Temple following a Supreme Court decision in 2019. Moreover, the revised textbooks also address the border dispute between India and Pakistan, with changes made to reflect the Indian government's position on Jammu and Kashmir.
Overall, these revisions by the NCERT aim to provide a more nuanced and updated understanding of historical and political events in India, taking into account recent developments and legal verdicts.
