Ukraine launches over 50 drones into Russia, damaging power substations.
In one of its most significant air assaults of the conflict, Ukraine deployed over 50 drones against Russia. According to Moscow defence officials on Friday, Ukraine launched more than 40 drones into Russia's bordering Rostov region, marking a notable escalation in hostilities as Kyiv's forces intensify their attacks on Russian territory.
Russia's Defense Ministry reported that a total of 44 drones were "intercepted and destroyed" in the Morozovsky district, situated over 100 kilometres (60 miles) from the border. The attack resulted in damage to a power substation, as stated by Rostov Governor Vasily Golubev.
Reports from Russian media indicated the presence of a military airfield near the town of Morozovsk, although it remained uncertain whether the airfield was the intended target of the assault. Furthermore, the Russian Defense Ministry disclosed that nine additional drones were intercepted over various border regions including Kursk, Belgorod, Krasnodar, and the nearby Saratov region. Ukrainian authorities, typically reticent about such actions, offered no immediate comment. Drone warfare has emerged as a pivotal aspect of the conflict, which has now extended into its third year following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Along the 1,000-kilometer (600-mile) frontline, where conventional fighting has largely stagnated, both sides utilize low-cost drones to neutralize expensive military assets.
The Kremlin's forces have extensively employed Iranian-designed Shahid drones to target urban areas within Ukraine. Conversely, Kyiv has cultivated a burgeoning defense industry, featuring drones, including lethal unmanned sea vessels, which have proven to be effective. Russian authorities have persistently accused Ukraine of conducting frequent drone attacks on power plants, oil refineries, and other installations in western regions of Russia near the border. Last month, Russia reported that Ukraine launched a barrage of 35 drones targeting such facilities. Some of these attacks have reached deep into Russian territory, stretching as far as Moscow and 1,200 kilometres (745 miles) east of Ukraine.
Despite Ukraine's inability to match the scale of Russia's military capabilities, Moscow recently initiated a widespread barrage comprising 99 drones and missiles targeting Ukraine's energy infrastructure across various regions of the country.
